Días de los Muertos in San Francisco

Conexiones helped fund and carry out the initial stages of production and fundraising efforts for a film documentary project (Dia de los Muertos in San Francisco Film) on this subject in partnership with SOMArts, the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, and many others (2008-2010).   In 2011, we turn our attention to funding the growth of an online archival video collection of already existing videos and primary source footage relevant to the various events unfolding in San Francisco in October and early November of each year and the work of the cultural workers and artists making it possible.

We are particularly interested in the Día de los Muertos celebrations happening in San Francisco because they tell a powerful story of how, through the arts, generous tradition-sharing, and meaningful cultural expression, deep intercultural community-building and social healing occurs.  It is our belief that the San Francisco community, especially the Mission District, is more peaceful because of this annual shared celebration. This celebration was originally gifted to the U.S. community by Chicano cultural workers and is increasingly adopted by those who come into contact with it. It is a great example of an emerging and evolving shared tradition that is building cultural convivencia and highlights the power of individuals and art in building a more peacefully shared world.  Death, after all, is a topic that unites us all and in San Francisco thousands of individuals from different cultures and backgrounds come together each year around November 2nd to honor the memory of their loved ones and the endless cycle of life and death – cultural centers, sidewalks, streets and parks are transformed by the ever-evolving artistic expression around this unifying theme. It is truly a sight to behold.  We hope our video archive helps tell and preserve this story in some small way and inspires other Latino artists around the world to bring this unifying tradition to their little corner of the world.
